How to Optimize Domain Parking Pages for Yahoo! Search
Monte: Oh, okay. Good. Now, getting to some other things related around the domainer community, one of the things we went over with some of the other search companies that we’ve had online are some of the tips or tricks of how people who own domain names and are monetizing their domains be better informed, walk away from especially an interview like this with some things that maybe they didn’t know about that can help them either place higher in the Yahoo! search results or optimize their page better. Can you give us, give the community some things that the domain community can be doing to help generate more revenues for themselves and have more relevant search results on their landing pages?
Tim: Yea, I mean, when you’re talking about domainers, you are talking about people who have content on the page or are parking domains?
Monte: Well, I would say both. I would like you to address both sides, because there is a huge community obviously that use Overture search results and for their park domains they linguistically map those domain names or you guys can linguistically map those domain names to pull up relevant content and relevant links; and every time somebody would click on one of those links, they obviously get to share in the revenue with Overture/Yahoo! with that result. So that’s one side of the coin. Then, those that have content that want to make better use of their frames, similar to AdSense but some of the things that maybe Yahoo! is coming out with or already has available that can generate more revenue for them.
Tim: Yea, in terms of Publisher Solutions offered by Yahoo! Marketing Services, there are obviously lots of rumors around about…and what people are calling an AdSense competitor and there are some news articles out there, basically right now, if people want to find out more about these services and be notified when future services becomes available, you can go to publisher.yahoo.com and you can put in your email address. And when we start launching additional services in the future, Publishers will definitely notify you. At this point, we’re doing some initial testing and some new advertiser and publisher products, as you have probably seen on some of the blogs that are around the web. There’s one product manager from Yahoo! Marketing Services down in Pasadena and he has a blog and he’s been testing one of these products which has gotten quite a lot of publicity.
Monte: Can you share how people might be able to view that; because these are some of the things that are exciting for Yahoo! to come out with and I’m sure that a lot of domainers are interested in seeing some of the examples of what’s going to be available in the near future?
Tim: I know NickW on ____Watch has it on his blog. He links to it; so I think if someone goes to that site, they can probably check out that domainer. Maybe someone could put it…I don’t remember the domain, per se, but I know it’s all around the Internet. So, maybe someone who knows can just post it on the chat forum. I just don’t remember that right now; but I can either, when you’re on, I’ll come back in the chat room when Stefanie is on, I can post it if no one does it before me.
Monte: Okay, okay... great...and how about the parking page solutions and some of the things that may be coming out there? What’s going on in the international side of things, picking up relevant content from the international community, which is growing by leaps and bounds, by the way? How is Overture and Yahoo! addressing that? I also want to touch a little bit on fraud prevention, and I know that’s a big issue and a big concern for all the PPC companies as well, and some of the things that we can all do….
Tim: What were you saying? Can you say that again? What is the biggest concern?
Monte: Fraud.
Tim: Oh, fraud. Yea.
Monte: Yea, fraud, which is of course a big concern. Everyone wants to prevent fraud, because it affects everybody’s rev share and their ultimate revenue; and talk about some of the things that you guys are doing that are innovative to make sure that what people are typing in, they are getting legitimate contact and both the advertiser and the publisher are getting paid the most or getting the best results from that.
Tim: Right. Yea, so Overture…what used to be called Overture…has a bunch of different solutions for domain park pages. Typically in Yahoo! Search we aim to keep these pages out of the index generally; because it is not really a good user experience if someone comes to a domain that just has paid links on it and no user contact. So, typically, we try and keep these out of the results; and then when they start to have content on them, we will include them back into the index.
Monte: Alright, so a parking page with Yahoo! results would not be obviously something that would be indexed within Yahoo! searching.
Tim: Right, because we think that, when you’re on a search result page, you don’t really want to click through and get another search result page that’s a little, redundant circular.
