New EPP regulations now in effect

To better protect domain owners against high jacking and theft, ICANN recently initiated new regulations regarding how .com and .net domains may be transferred between registrars. The transfer code requirements have long been standard for the other TLD extensions, including .org, .info, .biz, .us, and others.

To complete a transfer, the new registrar must receive a special Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) code that is supplied from the old registrar. Per the ICANN regulations, an email or fax verifying transfer authorization is also required. For security reasons, only the domain owner may access or request the EPP code.

Make sure you're following the new regulations:

  1. Request the EPP codes from the current registrar for all names being transferred.
  2. Expect an FOA (Form of Authorization) notice from the receiving registrar. This will be sent to the official Whois contact. If you are using privacy services, your current registrar should forward the FOA email to you.
  3. Email the received EPP codes as well as the accepted FOA to the new registrar.

Moniker can help you find your code

All registrars handle EPP codes differently. For some registrars, the EPP code is the equivalent of the authorization code (a.k.a., Auth Code) listed in the domain detail. For other registrars, such as Network Solutions, you must request the code as needed. Moniker is familiar with the procedures at most other registrars and can help you find the right code when the time comes.
